The Myth of Someday


Do you dream of someday?

Most of us wish for and dream of a future with more success, more wealth, more happiness, more energy, and more freedom to do the things we want.

Someday I will buy my dream house. Someday I will take that trip. Someday I will get healthy.

We see a future we intend and hope to get someday. Of course, we never actually get to that someday future. It’s someday, but never NOW.

This may surprise you but we actually only live in the present and are only always in the present. You can keep putting off your dreams for someday, but that illusion called someday will never come.

The myth of someday is just as stifling to your life as your past if onlys and should haves.

Every decision and choice you have made about yourself and your life is currently affecting your present and also your future.

If you are constantly re-living past mistakes or past choices, those experiences will come with you into the present and therefore your future. Even though you never really arrive in the future, all your experiences, choices, and thoughts ultimately create it. So if you are dreaming of someday, you will always dream of someday.

You cannot change your past and your present has already been shaped by past thoughts and choices. However, you can change your future. You can change your thoughts and actions today to create the future you really want.

To re-write your future and get out of the someday rut, there are several things you can do.

First off you have to clear out the clutter from your future and create an empty space where you can write something new—what you really want. To do this, put the past in the past. Realize that stewing, replaying, and focussing on the past will only leave you stuck in the past. No matter what has happened or what you have done, it’s the past. Now move on. Accept, forgive, and bless the past for all it has done for you—making you who you are today. And then let it go. Wipe the slate clean—you can never change the past but you can change the future. Once you have an empty space to work with, all your illusionary somedays disappear because they only existed as part of projected hopes and fears from the past.

Next, to re-write your future, you need to build integrity into the process. See your relationship to the what you write as a matter of honouring your word. If you commit to it, that is a promise to yourself—don’t break it.

Now you are ready to write your new future. This isn’t a someday…this is NOW. Visualize yourself in the future you truly want. Write about it; describe it in great detail; meditate on it. Take your empty space and fill it back up not with hopes and somedays, but what your reality will be as if you were living it today.

For example, let’s say you dream of living in a big mansion but today you live in a bungalow. Don’t be wishing and saying “someday I will win the lottery and buy myself a big mansion”. No. Instead, picture yourself living in the mansion believing it is already yours. See yourself happy in your new home. Then do one tiny thing to move yourself closer to make your vision a reality—do this every day—one tiny thing. Even if it takes you years, you still know that this mansion is inevitable and is yours.

It is not someday; it is today.

If there is something you have dreamed of doing or of having someday, I urge you to clear out the past and make room for it today. The things you do and think today create your future. Create the future you really want; not one that happens by neglect.

Today is a great day to start. If not now, then when?
