Just because you exist does not mean that you are living.
If you wake up each day with a groan and a sigh for another work day and drag yourself out of bed; if you eat, work, sleep, and run errands in between; if you never take time for fun or yourself; if you are constantly living in the future—then you simply exist.
On the other hand, if you wake up and jump out of bed each day excited about the opportunities that might come your way; if you purposely plan your schedule to give yourself free time for family, fun, and self-development; if you live each day with passion; if you are doing what you are meant to do—then you are living.
The sad truth is that the majority of the population exists.
But the ultimate purpose of life is to LIVE!
You were born to experience life. You were born with dreams and the ability to achieve them. Simply put, that is your purpose. You are a gift from the Universe to this world.
So HOW do you move from simply existing to actually living your best life when you have bills to pay and mouths to feed?
I have heard it time and time again, “I can’t just quit my job to become or do [fill in your dream here]. My family would suffer and we would all starve!”
But look at it this way, what if right now is exactly how you will live the rest of your life?
Would you be content to be where you are at right now or would you regret never having done all the things on your bucket list? What if you died today? Is this the legacy you want to leave? How do you want to be remembered?
To start living, you do NOT need to drastically change your current circumstances.
But you do need to add tiny amounts of passion to your life every day.
Do you have a vision of your ideal life? What exactly does that life look like? Picture it in your mind completely: your house and material things, your career, your relationships, your finances, your health, etc.
Imagine all of it to the tiniest detail—experiences, touch, taste, smell, sounds. What are you doing that adds passion and fulfillment daily to your ideal life? Get really clear on it.
Then break it down into its smallest parts. What could you do today that would move you closer to your ideal life and passion?
For example, let’s assume it is one of your dreams to own a yacht and sail around the world. That seems like a pretty big dream. Impossible many might say.
You probably can’t simply quit your job, grab the family, and suddenly take off around the world. It takes money, training, and time.
However, you can visualize exactly what it looks like to be on your yacht sailing around the world. Feel the wind in your hair, the sun on your skin. Taste the salty air. See yourself and your family smiling and having a great time at all the various ports of call. Feel the emotions as if you are really there. Do that for five minutes every day before you go to sleep.
Next, add sailing into your life in whatever method you can.
Perhaps you can take sailing lessons at your local marina (if you live near a large body of water); join your local yacht club (BTW…it isn’t as expensive as you think to join a yacht club, you can sign on as a volunteer or be part of a crew to get a discounted rate); research seafaring yachts (print your ideal one and post it somewhere you will see every day); join a travel forum that discusses traveling by sea; decorate a room in your house in a nautical theme; in your off time live and breathe sailing.
There are literally hundreds of things you could do to add some of your passion into your life. You still are working at your regular job and supporting your family, but now you have a focus and a goal.
Your subconscious mind will now work with the Universe to make your vision a reality. It won’t happen over night. It may even take years. But if you persevere and keep moving forward, you will succeed. It is inevitable.
One tiny task a day, or even a week, will eventually make your ideal vision your reality. If you put one foot in front of the other, you will eventually cross the street. The same basic principle applies to dreams.
My challenge to you is to find a small way to add your passion into your daily life. Stop simply existing, and start living.
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman
