It’s time to embrace change…

Are you afraid to change?

Are you nervous of all the changes going on in your life and the world today?

It’s true; change is scary. It’s the unknown. But change is also inevitable. Are you the exact same person as you were 10 or 20 years ago?

Imagine if one day a higher power came to you and said “From this day forward, you will never change one bit as a person. You will be EXACTLY the same person you are now, and you will never experience change for the rest of your life.” I would seriously freak out if someone told me that.

Life is change.

Your body and cells are constantly changing. Every seven years every single cell in your body changes —in essence creating an entirely new you. The economy, technology, and how we communicate is constantly changing. Can you imagine the world without internet, computers, or cell phones? They haven’t been around all that long.

You can resist change and be swept away by it or you can embrace it, adapt, learn, and benefit.

When you embrace change with your entire being and as part of your life, you end up finding things that make your life richer and more fulfilling. You move from fearing change to embracing the new opportunities and experiences it brings into your life. You grow personally and professionally.

You may have had major changes such as job loss, relationship breakdown or financial hardship.

You can choose to see the downside, become depressed, angry, resentful, and frustrated. You can worry and panic about your situation. OR you can see this change as an amazing opportunity. Perhaps you’ll find a more fulfilling job with better pay. Perhaps a new community will bring new friends. For many people, financial hardship has brought them closer to their own family, improved relationships, and been the catalyst for creative solutions around the home.

Every event can be seen as either positive or negative. Ultimately, it’s your own perception and thoughts that drive your emotions and reactions.

Think back to a time when you resisted change.

Perhaps it was a job, technology, a new location, or even your baby starting grade one or leaving the nest. It was a major change and you wondered how you would ever cope. What happened once you surrendered to the fact that you knew change was inevitable? Did your life improve? Did a new opportunity eventually appear? Do you look back and think “I am SO glad that happened. It has brought so many great things into my life.”???

If you can remember that you’ve survived and thrived from change in the past, you can start to embrace each new change and learn to approach it with excitement rather than dread.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you embrace change.

  • What’s changing in my life that I’m currently resisting?
  • Why am I resisting that change?
  • What am I afraid might happen to me?
  • What’s the payoff for keeping things the way they are?
  • What’s the cost I’m paying for keeping things the way they are?
  • What benefits might there be in this change?

Ask yourself the above questions every time you feel yourself resisting change. If you consistently work on embracing change rather than fearing it, in time you will naturally become excited when changes happen in your life. Embrace change and start living the fuller, happier life you are meant to live.
